September 3, 1939 - German U-boat sinks British passenger ship Athenia.'

September 3, 1939 - Great Britain declares war on Germany. France follows six hours later quickly joined by Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Canada.

September 3, 1940 - Hitler orders invasion in England on September 21st.

September 3, 1940 - U.S. trades Britain fifty destroyers in exchange for navel bases in Newfoundland and the West Indies.

September 3, 1941 - First use of Zyclon-B gas in Auschwitz. (Used on Russian prisoners of war)

September 3, 1943 - British 8th army lands in South Italy.

September 3, 1943 - General Castellano signs cease fire treaty in Sicily.

September 3, 1944 - Sixty-eighth and last transport of Dutch Jews, (Including Anne Frank) leaves to Auschwitz.

September 3, 1944 - Canadian troops liberate Abbeville, France.

September 3, 1944 - French troops liberate Lyon.

September 3, 1944 - Tank division of British Guards free Brussels.

September 3, 1945 - Japanese forces in Philippines surrender to Allies.
